More Than Family-Run Holiday Cottages In Cumbria: The Best Place To Truly Slow Down

If you're looking for family-run holiday cottages in Cumbria, you're probably searching for more than somewhere to sleep. You want somewhere peaceful. Somewhere welcoming. Somewhere that feels personal.

That's exactly why Eden Valley Breaks exists. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the countryside, we've created a place where you can switch off, breathe a little deeper and enjoy the simple things, whether that's watching nature at work, casting a line into the water, or listening to birdsong instead of traffic.

We're not the biggest holiday cottage business, and we don't want to be. We believe being small means we can care more, try harder and never take our guests for granted.

Eden Valley Breaks has been welcoming guests for decades, although under a different name. For more than 25 years, these cottages were known as Crossfield Cottages, run by Dan's parents, who built a loyal following of returning guests.

When Dan took over a couple of years ago, rather than simply carrying on, he rebuilt it under the Eden Valley Breaks name while keeping everything people already loved about staying here.

Since then, the cottages and facilities have continued to improve, but the heart of the place hasn't changed. You'll still find family run holiday cottages in Cumbria tucked away in the same quiet valley, surrounded by open countryside, wildlife and the slower pace of life that keeps guests coming back.

We Didn't Start From Scratch. We Started Again.

Why Being Small Makes A Big Difference

We're not the biggest holiday destination in Cumbria, and that's never been the goal. Being a smaller, family-run business means we can focus on the little things that often make the biggest difference. We have time to welcome our guests properly, share local recommendations and make sure every countryside break feels personal from the moment you arrive.

Every improvement we make is with our guests in mind, whether that's upgrading the cottages, looking after the grounds or simply making sure you have everything you need for a relaxing break. We believe genuine hospitality isn't about grand gestures; it's about creating peaceful holiday accommodation where people feel comfortable, cared for and happy to return.

That's the kind of holiday experience we've always wanted to offer, and it's what we'll continue striving for every day.

For us, holidays have never been about ticking attractions off a list. They're about escaping the frenzy of modern life. They're about enjoying your morning coffee while the countryside wakes up around you, watching the ducks on the lake, taking the dog for a proper walk without worrying about traffic, or spending an afternoon fishing simply because you can.

Our six self-catering holiday cottages sit within a peaceful sandstone farmstead surrounded by open countryside, creating the perfect setting for relaxing countryside breaks. Guests enjoy private fishing, a secure dog run, beautiful gardens and a stretch of Croglin Water, all included as part of their stay.

We don't charge extra because you've brought your dog or because you'd like to spend a few peaceful hours fishing. We simply think those things should be part of the experience.

Whether you're visiting for a romantic weekend, a family holiday or a quiet countryside getaway, we hope you'll discover what so many returning guests already have: sometimes the best holidays really are the simplest ones.

More Than A Place To Stay

Why Our Guests Keep Coming Back

There are plenty of beautiful places to stay in the countryside, so we'd never expect people to return simply because of the view. We think they come back because of how staying here makes them feel. Life is busy enough without your holiday feeling rushed too. Here, there's no pressure to fill every minute.

A holiday isn't always about doing more - sometimes it's about doing less. Whether you're spending the day exploring, reading in the garden or simply enjoying a slower pace of life, we hope Eden Valley Breaks feels like somewhere you can properly switch off. Many of our guests return year after year, and we think that's because they've found somewhere that simply feels comfortable, welcoming and unhurried.

Looking After The Little Things

When Dan took over the business, it wasn't simply about giving the cottages a new name. It was about giving them a new future.

Since then, we've continued investing in the cottages, improving the facilities and making thoughtful changes that help every stay feel a little more comfortable. Some of those improvements are obvious, like superfast WiFi and EV charging. Others are much less noticeable, but just as important: keeping the grounds looking their best, making sure the cottages are spotless, taking the time to welcome guests properly.

We believe it's often the little things people remember most, and those are usually the things that never appear on a booking confirmation.

We're proud to be a family-run business, but that's only meaningful if it shows in the way we look after people.

From the moment you arrive, we want you to feel welcome, comfortable and free to enjoy your holiday at your own pace. If you leave feeling rested, refreshed and already looking forward to coming back, then we'll know we've got it right.
